A Note from
Dr. Allen
When I first learned about the vision for the Frank Liu Jr. Academy for Music and Arts, I knew I wanted to be part of it. Throughout my career — as a teacher, elementary administrator, and principal of Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts — I have seen how deeply the arts shape young people's lives and strengthen their academic success. Those experiences are why FLAMA matters so much to me.
FLAMA's mission is simple but powerful: to pursue academic excellence through the arts. By placing music and visual art at the center of a rigorous academic program, the school helps students develop knowledge, perseverance, collaboration, and creativity.
Research and experience show that when students engage deeply in music and art, they build focus, confidence, and the habits of mind that lead to success in reading, mathematics, and beyond.
FLAMA will be a place where executive function development, cognitive science-informed teaching, and daily arts instruction converge to create joyful, rigorous learning. Our goal is to graduate students ready to get the most from high school and college.
I have seen how the arts can transform children's learning and self-perception. It is an honor to help build a school where music, art, and academics come together to open doors of opportunity for Houston students.
