The Frank Liu Jr. Academy for Music and Arts was founded on Frank Liu Jr.’s conviction that music and art are the engines of academic excellence, community, and lifelong flourishing. FLAMA carries his conviction forward every day.

Frank Liu Jr.

Frank Liu Jr. was a visionary Houston musician, businessman and advocate for his home city. FLAMA is founded on his belief in the transformative power of education and the arts. Frank Jr. was himself a gifted, driven student who thrived in pursuits ranging from music to mathematics to basketball.  FLAMA will prepare students for the same wide-ranging success in their own lives.  Most importantly, Frank was a kind and generous friend to all, whose grace as an educator, and generosity of spirit, we take as the bar for our own success. These values drive everything we do as a school and a community.

School Model

How We Teach

01

Cognitive Science & Direct Instruction

Teaching grounded in how the brain actually learns. Explicit modeling, guided practice, and spiraled sequencing build lasting mastery — in academics and the arts alike. Classrooms are interactive, not passive.

02

Intentional Executive Function Skills

Achievement depends on more than academics. From Pre-K through 8th grade, FLAMA explicitly builds students' ability to plan, self-regulate, persist, and collaborate — skills reinforced daily in music and art.

03

Music & Arts as the Foundation

At FLAMA, music and arts are core. Daily general music, choir, instrumental instruction, and visual arts are woven into the academic day, with literacy and math intentionally integrated throughout.
